11/2 c. maple syrup
¾ c. milk
2T. shortening
1c. flour
3T. sugar
¼ t. salt
2t. baking powder
1 egg

Heat syrup to boiling in a buttered 9 inch round cake pan. Make batter with the remaining ingredients. Pour over syrup. Bake 30 minutes in a 400 degree oven. Remove from oven; place a plate on top, and carefully turn upside down. Garnish with whipped cream, or serve with vanilla ice-cream.
